General:
Annual herb from a taproot; stems erect, solitary, much branched, 10-50 cm tall.
Leaves:
Stem leaves usually triangular with arrowhead-like lobes, entire except sometimes with a few teeth at the base, greenish on upper surfaces, usually greyish-mealy below, stalked, 1-4 cm long, rounded to pointed.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of dense clusters in large terminal and smaller lateral spikes, densely mealy, without stalks.
Fruits:
Thin, membranous envelopes, 1 mm wide; seeds obtusely margined, slightly roughened.

Habitat / Range

Dry roadside banks, calcareous cliff bases or open forests in the steppe and montane zones; frequent in S BC east of the Coast-Cascade Mountains; E to AB and S to TX, CA and MX.
